KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (pic) flew into Kuala Lumpur after boarding a noon flight from here.
He is expected to throw his party’s support behind Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, with senior political sources in Sabah saying that 20 of the 26 MPs from Sabah and Labuan were behind the Prime Minister’s new coalition.
The remaining six Sabah MPs from PKR and DAP are expected to follow their respective party lines for now.
Sources say all Warisan’s nine MPs, Upko’s lone MP and Sabah Bersatu’s five were unanimous in their support for Dr Mahathir.
Sabah-based opposition led by Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan (Sabah STAR-Keningau), Arthur Kurup (PBRS-Pensiangan) and Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili (PBS-Kota Marudu) were also on board, the sources said.
The sources also claimed that 133 MPs in the 222-member Parliament were behind Dr Mahathir.
They added that Warisan, who was not a Pakatan Harapan member of the coalition that replaced Barisan Nasional in the 2018 general election, was expected to play the supportive role if the new coalition shaped up.
There is still no clear indication if the proposed coalition government would materialise, the sources said, adding that both Sabah and Sarawak political parties are prepared to work with the federal government of the day.
Both PKR and DAP are part of the 11-member state Cabinet of Shafie and if any change occurs, political realignments are expected.
