PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested five men, including an alleged rapist, in connection with a robbery at a jewellery shop in Klang less than 24 hours after the incident happened.

State CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Fadzil Ahmat said the first arrest was made Saturday (Feb 22) after a few shoppers apprehended the suspected thief and handed him over to the police.

Three more men in their 20s were arrested on Sunday (Feb 23) in connection with the crime.

"We were tracking down the last suspect and finally arrested him at around 9pm," SAC Fadzil said.

SAC Fadzil said the latest suspect had past records including two counts of gang-robbery and armed robbery and a drug offence.

He is also a wanted man in Bandar Sunway for alleged rape.

Meanwhile, South Klang OCPD Asst Comm Shamsul Amar Ramli said police also seized two motorcycles from the suspects.

On Saturday, a man was apprehended by members of the public at a shopping mall in Klang after he allegedly robbed a jewellery shop with an accomplice.

The duo are believed to have entered the shop wearing motorcycle helmets with dark visors just as workers were closing down for the day.

They also broke display cases with a hammer and tried to flee with the loot when a security guard pointed a gun at them.

A few shoppers at the mall managed to catch one of the suspects while the other managed to flee.

The case is being investigated under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery and armed robbery.
