ALOR SETAR: A man, believed to be mentally unstable, was arrested by police after allegedly throwing kerosene at a bilal (muezzin) and setting him alight.

Kota Setar OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Rozi Jidin said the man in his 40s had allegedly committed the offence because he was angry with the bilal who had rejected his application for assistance before.

He said the man was arrested at Flat Insaniah area here around 1.30pm on Wednesday (Feb 19).

Asst Comm Mohd Rozi said Amri Budin, 67, was about to start his duties at Masjid Al-Hasanah in Taman Rakyat at 5.45am on Wednesday when his attacker, who was wearing a mask, barged into the mosque compound and threw kerosene at Amri before setting him alight.

Amri suffered 25% burns to his face, hands and left side of the body.

He has since been sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for treatment.

Asst Comm Mohd Rozi said the suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine when a urine test was conducted.

"Checks show that the suspect has a criminal record for crime and drug-related offences.

"He was also detained for an arson case at a mosque in December last year," he said.

Asst Comm Mohd Rozi added that police have seized a motorcycle, petrol and clothes believed to be used by the suspect.

The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon and also under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.
