Looking to the future: Dr Wee speaking at the Sabah MCA Chinese New Year open house in Kota Kinabalu.

KOTA KINABALU: Collaborating with other Opposition parties has led to recent Barisan Nasional by- election wins and Sabah Umno will continue these alliances as it prepares for the next general election, says Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.

The Sabah Umno chief noted that the “winning formula” was key in the Tanjung Piai and Kimanis by-elections in Johor and Sabah respectively.“To win the hearts of the people, we must be one and we have to be together, ” he said.

Bung Moktar said they expected more success with this strategy in GE15.

“Elections can happen anytime and we have to be ready. We can see that the Pakatan Harapan government is unstable as they are fighting among themselves, ” he said during the Sabah MCA Chinese New Year open house here yesterday.

State MCA chief Lu Yen Tung said the party’s central leadership had allowed Sabah MCA to find partners that could help strengthen the party and the Opposition in Sabah.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said more autonomy for Sabah MCA meant more confidence and support from the people.

“We give them full endorsement to handle matters that are autonomous for Sabah MCA, ” he said.

Dr Wee added that their main focus was to win the next general election and to see that the needs of the people were met.

“We won’t compromise on Sabah issues, ” he said.

When asked whether Sabah Umno and MPs supported calls for Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to stay on as prime minister, Bung Moktar said they supported anyone in the government who served the people well.

“I always say, if they did well, we will support them.

“If the government under Dr Mahathir did well for the people, we would support them but if not, we would condemn them, ” he said.

However, he said Sabah Umno leaders had not discussed the matter further.
