IPOH: Measures are in place to protect the country’s secrets, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic) in response to reports that an encryption firm, linked to foreign intelligence agencies, had sold rigged devices to some 120 countries, including Malaysia.

The Home Minister said steps had been taken to ensure no high-level and important information could be leaked out.

“It’s nothing new and not just in Malaysia, but other countries are also involved.“I’ve discussed the matter with Police Inspector-General Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador and we have control over important information or secrets, ” he said after opening the national-level Rela’s 48th anniversary celebration at the Indera Mulia Stadium here yesterday.

International news agencies reported on Feb 11 that US and German intelligence services had accessed top-secret communications of governments for decades through their hidden control of a top encryption company, Crypto AG.

The Swiss company had been supplying equipment for encoding communications to these countries since 1945 to the early 2000s.

According to the reports, Crypto was secretly owned by the US Central Intelligence Agency along with with Germany’s BND Federal Intelligence Service.

These agencies were able to easily break the codes of the Cryto devices to access government communication.

Meanwhile the IGP has also assured the usage of the devices were limited to short-term operations.

“The transferring of information are not that of those that are sensitive. We have our own encryption to ensure that we have control, ” he said.
