Families lose RM8,000 cash in fire

MIRI: Two families living under the same roof kept about RM35,000 in their kampung house.

They lost about RM8,000 of it during a fire yesterday morning.

“There were 14 people from two families living in the house, ” said the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department.

It said the firemen found about RM28,000 while putting out the flames at the double-storey house in Kg Penekup in Ulu Mukah district in central Sarawak.

“The team gave the money back to the owners who said there was more than RM35,000 which they kept in the house, ” the department said in a statement.

Pictures taken by the firemen showed family members and firemen salvaging the money.

The 14 people in the wooden house are aged between one and 73. They managed to escape the flames without serious injury, the department said.

The department said the Mukah station was alerted on the fire by the village folk. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
