DUNGUN (Bernama): The police have arrested an Indonesian national who is believed to be responsible for the death of a plantation worker who was stabbed at the workers' quarters in an oil palm plantation at Kampung Beril, near Paka here, early Wednesday (Feb 12).
Dungun OCPD Supt Baharudin Abdullah said the man was found hiding in the undergrowth behind the workers’ quarters when police arrived at the scene after receiving a report on the incident.
The police also seized a machete, believed to be used to stab the victim, he said, adding that the victim was then brought to the Dungun police headquarters for investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
In the incident, which occurred at 2.45am Wednesday, Mohd Zukanain Abd Aziz, 39, was killed while his wife, Rosnah Muhamed, 34, was injured after being stabbed.
According to Baharudin, the couple and their five children were said to have gone to the suspect’s house, who stayed alone, at about 8pm for dinner.
"After dinner, the suspect went to clear some undergrowth near the compound and then, armed with the machete, approached Mohd Zukanain, who on seeing his friend acting weirdly, went to his car to get a machete as well.
"With his other hand, Mohd Zukanain tried to grab the the machete from the suspect.
"At the same time, the suspect seized the machete from Mohd Zukanain’s hand and used it to stab him (Mohd Zukanain) before stabbing Mohd Zukanain’s wife, and then fleeing, ” he added.
Despite the injury, Supt Baharuddin said Mohd Zukanain was able to drive to a guard post at the ECRL construction site at Kg Beril to seek help and the couple was then sent to the Paka Health Clinic, but Mohd Zukanain died on the way and his body was sent to the Dungun Hospital for post mortem.
Baharudin said the couple were believed to have befriended the suspect four years ago as Mohd Zukanain was working in an adjacent plantation. - Bernama
