SIBU: An elderly woman and her daughter perished in a fire which destroyed their wooden house in Kampung Sekaan, Matu in Mukah.

The deceased have been identified as Sedah Sahari, 80, and her disabled daughter, Remlah Mesie, 50.

Remlah's brother, Abdul Razak Mesie, 40, survived after he managed to escape the raging fire.

He rushed to the hospital by villagers after suffering breathing difficulties caused by smoke inhalation in the 2am fire on Wednesday (Feb 5).

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said that the fire totally destroyed two houses.

"Our men, when doing an overhaul of the house, found two bodies in the sitting room," it said.

The victims' bodies have been referred to the police for further action.
