SIBU: A lion dancer has been arrested for allegedly raping a 14-year-old at a playground near Emma’s Fort in Kanowit.

The 41-year-old widower was picked up at his home in Delta Road yesterday shortly after police received a report from the girl’s mother.

Kanowit police chief Deputy Supt Tega Bilong said preliminary investigations revealed that the girl, a Form Two student, met the man at the playground at about 5am on Wednesday.

He said while chatting, the man asked the girl to have sex and she did not resist when he pulled down her pants and kissed her cheek.

The girl, however, later asked the man to stop but he ignored her.

DSP Tega said after he had his way, the man went to perform a lion dance while the girl walked to the coffeeshop where she was working part-time.

“After returning home, the girl was questioned by her mother who received information that she was seen with a man at the playground.

“The girl tried to deny having sex with the man but eventually revealed the truth after being coerced by her mother, ” he said.

DSP Tega said the man had been remanded for investigation under Section 376 of the Penal Code for statutory rape.
