Drowned body of teen boat racer found

SIBU: The body of a teenager who was feared drowned while training for a boat race has been found.

The victim, Muhammad Izzat Farhan Ismail, aged 16 from Beladin Central Village, Pusa, was training for a regatta with 17 others on the Beladin River in Pusa, Sarikei late Wednesday (Jan 30) when the boat they were on capsized.

Others on the boat survived with minor injuries except for three – Hazwan Aryadi Jamel, 14; Ashfizan Sahari, 31 and Muhammad Alfin Lengah, 19 – who were admitted to Sarikei Hospital for treatment.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, search and rescue (SAR) teams were searching the surface of Sungai Beladin since Wednesday (Jan 29) until the body was found at 11.40am Friday (Jan 31).

After receiving a distress call at 7.19pm on Wednesday, firemen who arrived at the scene two hours later could not carry out a search as it was already dark and started the operation Thursday (Jan 30) morning.

In the 6pm incident Wednesday, the victim and 17 others were training for a boat race.

However, as they approached the LKIM Kampung Hulu Beladin Base, they suddenly lost control of the boat and hit a barge before capsizing.
