KOTA KINABALU: Two companies were charged with illegal logging on forest reserve and state land at the Sessions Court in Sandakan.

The companies Maxland Sdn Bhd, represented by its director Wong Shu Kiew, and Better Green Sdn Bhd, represented by Cheung Chau Seng, claimed trial before judge Indra Ayub on Wednesday.

They were charged with illegal felling of trees under Section 20(2) of the Forest Enactment 1968 in separate cases.

Indra also set trial from May 22 to 24 this year and case management on March 12.

The forestry department prosecution team was led by Peter Maurice Lidadun and Peter Jack Osmond while the two companies were represented by Ronny Cham.

Indra also set bail at RM100,000 with RM5,000 deposited along with two local sureties.

Prior to the setting of bail, Cham told the court there was no reason for his clients to abscond and requested bail to be set at RM5,000.

He pointed out both Maxland and Better Green were both logging contractors for Kekal Eramaju Sdn Bhd which was licensed under Section 24 of the Forest Enactment 1968.
