SHAH ALAM: One can only increase wealth through entrepreneurship and not by working for others, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic).

The Prime Minister said a paycheque can only be that much but running a business with the right will to succeed will be the making of millionaires.

Dr Mahathir said this to a 11,000 strong crowd of mostly young enterprising bumiputeras at a motivation event for entrepreneurs on Jan 26 organised by Richworks International Sdn Bhd here.

"I am interested to see those in rural areas to reach success in businesses as there is much disparity between the town and rural areas.

"Usually in the cities, people are richer, and in the rural areas, people are poorer.

"But if we learn how to do businesses, we too can get the same income, maybe more than those in the cities.

"If we want to take a paycheque, that is only that much you can get. But if you do business, you can even be billionaires," said Dr Mahathir.

Motivation speaker Dr Azizan Osman riled up the crowd of budding entrepreneurs and startups to give a rockstar welcome to Dr Mahathir, who was accompanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and Rural Development Minister Rina Harun.

Various successful bumiputera entrepreneurs who have made it big related their rag to riches stories to Dr Mahathir.

Their products ranging from baju kurung, furniture to self-care products have made them into millionaires with some having their own factories and major online platforms.

Dr Mahathir, who seemed to be very impressed, was all smiles as he listened to their profits of millions and their promises to be good taxpayers.

Dr Mahathir also told the crowd that he is interested to send local entrepreneurs to Okinawa, Japan, to learn trade skills in certain types of businesses there.

"During my recent visit to Okinawa, I found a number of businesses which we Malays can be good at.

"I want to find those who can be sent to Okinawa to learn business there. I visited a glass factory and I saw beautiful products.

"They asked me to make a glass product but how could I for I had never done such a product? But believe me, in 15 minutes, I could produce something beautiful.

"We can learn if we want to if there is a will. We all have our abilities," said Dr Mahathir.

The three-day event with the #NUH2020 (Nak Ubah Hidup) is aimed to guide participants to find potentials and how to control their finances in their businesses.
