KUALA LUMPUR: The first Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) party polls is seen to be shaping up as the platform for two big names in the party to consolidate party grassroots support across the nation.
Party insiders are terming it as a power play of the north and south, as supporters of party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir try to shore up stronger support for their respective leaders.
The sources also claimed that Bersatu leaders are aligning themselves to the respective factions of Mukhriz and Muhyiddin, as the fear of a purported impending crossover by Umno leaders in support of Dr Mahathir continues to plague the party’s grassroots.
“It’s about the future because there will be an increase in members in the long run. So, supporters of Muhyiddin and Mukhriz want to create their own factions to counter the influence of the new members, ” said sources.
The sources claimed that efforts by an Umno stalwart are ongoing in order to convince a group of grassroots Umno leaders to cross over to Bersatu.
If the planned crossover does happen, the sources said a number of Bersatu leaders, who are political greenhorns have already anticipated they would be disadvantaged in terms of experience and resources.
"Supporters of Muhyiddin and Mukhriz are trying to protect Bersatu from outsiders, but it is sad that they are not working together, ” said the sources.
A check of the present 28-member Bersatu supreme council line-up found that at least 10 of its members hail from southern states with at least 8 from northern states, while the home towns of the remaining 10 leaders could not be ascertained.
