Cops cripple cigarette smuggling ring in Chow Kit

KUALA LUMPUR: Police say they have crippled a smuggling ring which they believe supplies contraband cigarettes to shops in the Chow Kit area here.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Fahmi Visuvanathan Abdullah said came after police arrested a 25-year-old foreigner during a drug bust on Thursday (Jan 16) at Pasar Baru Chow Kit.

"He was carrying a bag containing a carton of clove cigarettes which we believed were smuggled," he said.

Further checks around the area resulted in the discovery of 440 cartons of smuggled cigarettes of different brands estimated to be worth about RM32,000 in taxes.

ACP Fahmi said the arrested foreigner was a general worker earning RM750 a month with no valid travel documents.

"We are now looking for his employer to help with investigations," he said.

The youth has been remanded for 14 days from Friday (Jan 17).

The case is being investigated under Section 135 of the Customs Act 1967 for smuggling and Section 15 of the Immigration Act for unlawful entry into the country.
