One Myanmar national feared drowned after late night beach outing

MIRI: Seven Myanmar men went for a late-night outing and a swim at the beaches near Samalaju Port in northern Sarawak, and now one of them is missing.

He is feared to have drowned.

The incident happened at about 10pm on Wednesday night (Jan 15) about 120km south of Miri.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said it had launched a search-and-rescue operation early Thursday morning (Jan 16).

"Seven Myanmar men went to the beach there to bathe. One of them went missing in the water.

"Bomba received an alert about the case at about 10pm and we have deployed a search-and-rescue team to find him," said Sarawak Bomba in its latest updates.

The missing man was identified as Aung Thu, 27.

The group are foreign workers who are working in Samalaju Industrial Estate adjacent the port.

The South China Sea along the northern Sarawak coast can become turbulent at times, with waves as high as 5m during stormy weather.
