SHAH ALAM: Young people should be encouraged to take up agriculture, says economic adviser to the government Tun Daim Zainuddin (pic).
He said this would help reduce imports, as well as create employment and increase income.
“This is important as currently, unemployment is high with a lot of jobless graduates, ’’ he told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of MyKampungku Japan yesterday.
MyKampungku Japan is geared towards showcasing and promoting Malaysian products, especially halal food and agriculture products by young local entrepreneurs, in conjunction with the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Daim said young graduates should be encouraged to take up agriculture.
“We ask them to go into agriculture and produce (goods) and locals can get fresh produce at lower prices. It will reduce imports and that is what we want to do, ” he said.On India’s alleged refusal to buy Malaysia’s palm oil, the former finance minister said all was not lost yet, citing the latest figures which showed that China had increased its import.“All countries need edible oil – whether they buy it from here or Indonesia, it does not matter.
“There will always be gaps in the palm oil trade which Malaysia can fill, ” he added.
