JOHOR BARU: More than RM1.2mil have been raised for the Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) through charity drives across the nation.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) said that the charity drives have received an overwhelming response from members of the public who are genuinely concerned about the college.
"TAR UC is close to the hearts of many, and we have seen people from all walks coming together to help the college.
"TAR UC will continue to shine with the overwhelming support of the public, which is evident in the various fundraising activities that have been conducted," he said in his speech during a fundraising dinner for the college here Thursday evening (Jan 9).
The charity drive was first organised during the Tanjung Piai by-election campaign period, and have since received encouraging support from the public.
On top of the accumulated total of about RM1.1mil, another RM120,000 have been collected during the charity dinner here, which includes the auction of a calligraphy painting that raised about RM10,000.
Johor Baru MCA deputy division chief, Ang Boon Heng, who is organising chairman of the dinner, said the amount raised exceeded his expectation.
"We did not expect to have been able to collect such an amount within such a short period of time.
"This shows many people have great faith in TAR UC and appreciates its contribution," he said.
Ang added those who have donated to the fund here include community leaders and businessmen as well as other members of the public.
