BEAUFORT: Parti Warisan Sabah candidate Datuk Karim Bujang hopes that discussions can be held with Petronas to build a processing plant in Kimanis instead of sending raw materials to Bintulu, Sarawak.
He said if a processing plant was built in Kimanis, there would also be more job opportunities for the local people.
He said that at present, there were only a handful of people in Kimanis working in the oil and gas sector.
Karim was responding to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal’s suggestion that no more oil and gas be sent to Sarawak for processing.
Karim said the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) in Kimanis sent a huge amount of oil and gas to be processed in Bintulu, with some bought by independent power producers directly.
“There is some leftover here and maybe we can discuss with Petronas to have them set up a processing plant in Kimanis so that we can provide jobs for the people here, ” he said during a walkabout in Membakut town and the weekly market here yesterday.
