Four arrested during anti-drug abuse ops in Penang

KEPALA BATAS: Two men and a woman were arrested for suspected drug abuse during a police operation at Jalan Bagan Luar, Butterworth on Saturday (Jan 4).

Seberang Perai Utara OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the suspects, aged between 33 to 51, were detained in an operation dubbed New Year's Eve Ops at about 1.45am.

"All of them were nabbed at a shophouse in Taman Selat in Butterworth. We found about 55.1g of drugs believed to be heroine on the suspects," he said in a statement.

ACP Noorzainy said investigations found that the drugs, worth about RM2,800 in total, were meant for their own usage.

The suspects, who are all unemployed, also tested positive for morphine and methamphetamine.

He said the trio would be remanded for seven days starting from Jan 4 for further investigation under Section 39B, 12(2), and 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act,

He added that in the same operation at about 3.20am Sunday (Jan 5), police detained a 19 year-old suspect behind a house at Jalan Haji Murshid, Butterworth.

He said police found 19g of heroin and 0.7g of syabu worth about RM1,000 on the suspect when he was arrested.

"The suspect will be remanded starting Sunday (Jan 5) for seven days," he said, adding that the case will be investigated under Section 39B and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
