47 detained for alleged cockfighting

SIBU: A total of 47 men were detained for alleged involvement in illegal cockfighting in Pulau Kerto near here on Saturday (Jan 4) evening.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the men were deeply engrossed in the activity when 35 personnel from the 10th Battalion General Operation Force made the surprise raid at about 5.15pm on Saturday (Jan 5).

Also seized were RM6,974 in cash, 82 cockfighting spurs, seven live cocks, a weighing machine, a calculator, 820 round plastic chips, a machete, a bell, two holo gambling sets and a wall clock.

The suspects were remanded for investigations under Section 3(1) of the Cruelty to Animals Act 1960.

He said the place was a favourite haunt for such activities as a total of 34 people were arrested here and charged in court last year for a offences," he revealed.
