PETALING JAYA: A yellow weather alert has been issued for parts of Sarawak with heavy rain expected.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department said the alert was effective today till Thursday.
Strong winds and waves as high as 3.5m are expected during this time, with affected areas being Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah and Bintulu. Malaysia is currently experiencing the north-east monsoon, which started on Oct 24 and is expected to last until March.
A yellow alert is for weather that does not pose an immediate threat but caution should be exercised.
An orange alert means that people should prepare for bad weather.
Red indicates severe weather and that evacuations may be necessary.
