PETALING JAYA: Several representatives from some Malay non-governmental organisations made an appearance at the National Jawi Congress.

Forum organisers subsequently invited the group into the hotel ballroom as the congress was ongoing.

Among those seen included actress Ellie Suriaty Omar.

During the congress, one of the panelists Siti Kasim was about to speak when the group was invited into the ballroom.

The group was welcomed amid cheers and claps, with seats even cleared for them to sit.

One of the congress organisers Arun Dorasamy (pic) had earlier said in his opening speech Sunday (Dec 29) that protestors will be given room to speak at the congress.

He had also personally welcomed the group and spoke to them for several minutes after they were seated.

The congress is ongoing.

The National Jawi Congress is aimed at deradicalising the issue of Jawi in schools. It was held after the cancellation of Dong Jiao Zong’s meeting that was supposed to take place yesterday, to discuss the implementation of the Jawi calligraphy module in vernacular schools.
