The suspect (white shirt centre) is caught by the public.

SIBU: A jobless man who snatched a woman's handbag got more than he bargained for when his victim shouted, alerting passersby who proceeded to chase him down.

Sibu OCPD, Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the incident happened at about 9.30am on Christmas Day.

The complainant, 38, was buying medicine at a pharmacy on Jalan Sentral when a man approached her.

"All of a sudden, the suspect snatched her handbag and ran," he said.

The woman shouted loudly for help.

"Members of the public heard this and went after the suspect," he added.

The alarmed suspect tripped and fell on the road, whereupon he was overpowered by the people.

Stanley said the people who caught the suspect handed him over to policemen who were passing the area.

The suspect, he said, had been remanded for investigation under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery.
