Swift action by firemen snuff out fire at Bintulu oil refinery

MIRI: A fire at the Petronas Carigali petroleum refinery near Bintulu was swiftly doused before it could spread.

Swift action by firefighters at the refinery averted any major disaster on Wednesday (Dec 18) near Bintulu in northern Sarawak.

Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department said the fire happened at a sector housing oil-seawater mechanical pumps and destroyed three pumping facilities.

"Bomba Bintulu was alerted about the fire at about 5pm (Wednesday).

"By the time our teams arrived, the fire at three pumping facilities were already doused by the Petronas firefighters.

"The fire were at the pumps that were used for separating oil and seawater," said the Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department.

The fire was contained using foam and firefighting teams left the refinery around 7.30pm.

Meanwhile, in the Sri Aman district in southern Sarawak, a longhouse was razed on Wednesday evening.

The 6pm fire saw 17 housing units in Rumah Guntong destroyed.

Sarawak Bomba said 64 people were left homeless in the incident.

There were no casualties but a 54-year-old woman was hospitalised for suffering breathing difficulties caused by smoke inhalation.

The causes of both fires are being probed.
