Creating a world class urban lifestyle destination

The Exchange TRX is set to change the retail landscape of Malaysia, with its ‘park in a mall, mall in a park’ concept.

Imagine walking into a 10-acre rooftop park equipped with children, leisure, recreational and event amenities, all fully pedestrianised and seamlessly integrated into 2.2mil sqft of world class retail with over 500 retail partnerships featuring statement stores, some the most well-loved and new to market brands, first-of-its-kind dining, leisure and entertainment concepts; all right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

You won’t have to imagine much longer. Welcome to The Exchange TRX.

This 17-acre landmark mixed-use development will be the vibrant social heart of the 70-acre Tun Razak Exchange (TRX), a city-defining project which represents a bold vision for Kuala Lumpur as a world class international business and lifestyle destination, benchmarked against leading international hubs such as Singapore’s Marina Bay, London’s Canary Wharf and Hong Kong’s International Financial Quarters.

The Exchange TRX is being developed by Lendlease, an international property and infrastructure group in partnership with TRX City (a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ministry of Finance). The project will encompass six residential towers (known as TRX Residences), a hotel, office and a large-scale retail destination crowned by a first-of-its-kind 10-acre rooftop park.

Designed to global standards and inspired by Malaysia’s rich local heritage, arts, culture and economic diversity in tourism, leisure and entertainment, The Exchange TRX is set to be the new lifestyle destination of Kuala Lumpur.

With an international track record and core expertise in urban regeneration and placemaking, Lendlease will deliver what is called an “experiential lifestyle destination” through purposeful design and activation of mixed-use assets to create inclusive and connected communities.

Brendan Walker, project director of The Exchange TRX, Lendlease Malaysia said: “Our goal was to bring our international experience and core expertise in shaping cities and creating connected communities to deliver a vibrant, truly integrated, experiential lifestyle destination with The Exchange TRX – a place that people will want to live, work, play and be in. It’s about getting it right for the people, which means getting it right for the environment, for the society and for the economy in the places we build in.”

Approximately a quarter of TRX’s total mixed-development land area is dedicated to open parks and safe, activated green spaces equipped with fully pedestrianised streets, children, leisure and sports spaces, providing a sense of health and wellbeing and social connectedness.

The destination’s exceptional vehicular, digital and people connectivity including “smart city” design and purpose-built Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange is coupled by easy access to major road networks making it one of the most accessible districts in Kuala Lumpur, whether you travel by train, by road or on foot. It also has direct access to Kuala Lumpur’s major roads and highways such as MEX and the upcoming SPE, with links to Jalan Tun Razak, the network of roads in Bukit Bintang, as well as the SMART Tunnel via direct tunnel access.

Recognising the importance of a future ready, sustainable infrastructure in any world class development, the overall districts investments in green facilities such as wastewater management, energy and cooling utilisation, digital infrastructure and public spaces have been made to create a truly sustainable international business and lifestyle precinct.

The Exchange TRX’s retail partnerships will feature new to market brands, flagship statement stores, experiential dining, leisure and entertainment concepts spanning across 500 experience stores, all crowned and integrated into 10 acres of lush greenery and activated public space – the TRX Park.

Leading luxury Japanese department store, Seibu is among the first to unveil its retail store concept at The Exchange TRX. They believe this landmark destination will seamlessly bring to life Seibu’s vision of experiential and luxury retail and has made it their first and only Seibu department store in the country.

“I have scoured the world for retail inspirations for over 30 years and I can say I have come across nothing like this once-in-a lifetime dream project, ” said Datuk Alfred Cheng, group managing director of Sogo Group of Companies.

Seibu at The Exchange TRX which spans over 250,000sqft of retail space across four levels will offer unparalleled luxury, exceptional selection of luxury fashion and accessories brands, lifestyle and fun offerings as well as a feast of culinary delights through the first “depachika” in Malaysia; a distinctly Japanese food hall concept. It will also introduce Japan’s high levels of customer service known as “omotenashi”, a distinct and personalised Japanese approach to hospitality and service.

The store will bring in approximately 400 to 500 retail brands across the four levels, along with the largest selection of luxury watches, jewellery, accessories and shoes in the country, in one premises. About 100 of these brands would be new brands entering the Malaysian market for the first time.

These contemporary brands will be featured in a multi-brand environment in the store, something which has not been done in Kuala Lumpur before. The fashion floor will also house the largest selection of children’s luxury fashion brands in the country.

“As consumers today desire for more exciting and immersive shopping experiences, we see this collaboration with The Exchange TRX as the perfect way to expand our offerings to better serve our customers. We want to create a whole new experience for people where they can shop, eat, play and have fun. That’s what we intend to introduce at Seibu at The Exchange TRX, Malaysia’s first luxury department store, ” said Cheng.

A distinct feature of The Exchange TRX’s retail precinct is its seamless integration to the park, delivering a ‘Mall in a Park, Park in a Mall’ experience which breaks down the barriers between the indoors and outdoors.

The park offers open green spaces with cascading greenery, water features, eco-trails, playscapes and beautiful shaded areas that allows for anything from quiet contemplation to children’s play, experience one of a kind premium park dining or community gatherings and celebrations at the events lawn, as well as serve as one of Kuala Lumpur’s most scenic locations to host red carpet galas, festivals, concerts, movie premiers, international exhibitions and more.

Complementing this central attraction will be a curated space within The Exchange TRX dedicated to aspiring local art, culture and lifestyle entrepreneurs. Expect live music, specialty stores, artisan markets, imaginative restaurants and collaborative co-working niches to spring up along pedestrianised streets and event facilities.

“From new to market brands such as Seibu, luxury, high fashion, lifestyle and leisure stores, to immersive garden dining, international festivals or just throwing a frisbee with your kids at the park, the Exchange TRX is a multi-experience, diverse and inclusive destination catered for everyone, ” said Mitchell Wilson, head of retail, Lendlease Malaysia.

The Exchange TRX is targeted to open in phases from 2021 to 2025. The first phase of TRX Residences, one of the key components of The Exchange TRX is slated for launch in the first quarter of next year.
