With RM5.985bil in business leads, IGEM 2019 exceeded its target of RM2.8bil, which many thought as ambitious given the softening global economy, said minister Yeo Bee Yin.
“The success could not have been possible without our loyal exhibitors who have returned with dedication year after year, supporting and challenging us to achieve sustainability in definitive and transformative ways.
“I am also proud to announce that an unprecedented 61 organisations have pledged to be a part of IGEM 2020,” she said in her post-IGEM 2019 outcome speech yesterday read out on her behalf by Malaysian Green Technology Corporation chief executive officer Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor in a joint press conference with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida).
Yeo also congratulated sponsors Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Cypark and UEM Edgenta, along with the ministry’s partners and the organising team for IGEM 2019, which recorded 376 exhibitors and more than 40,000 visitors from 43 countries.
“I would like to thank IGEM’s strategic partner, Mida, and business-matching partner, Matrade,” she said, adding that the ministry is now raising the bar for IGEM 2020.
“We are targeting RM3.4bil in potential trade, investments or partnership agreements, as well as 420 exhibitors and 42,000 visitors from 42 countries,” she said.
IGEM 2020 is slated to be held from Oct 7 to 9 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the same venue as IGEM 2019.
“Malaysia’s active participation in global events will also fortify its position as the leading country in green initiatives throughout the region,” said Yeo as she encouraged companies to take advantage of the programmes planned for next year, such as Expo 2020 Dubai, which functions as a global stage to attract investments, forge agreements and promote international cooperation.
“We will also be showcasing Malaysia by welcoming millions of visitors to our shores as part of Visit Malaysia 2020,” she said.
Mida CEO Datuk Azman Mahmud said as of November 2019, it had 10 green-related projects in the pipeline, with investments of RM76.2mil following interest expressed at IGEM 2019.
“We expect more applications to be received in 2020,” he said.
