KUALA LUMPUR: A suspected car thief was shot in the arm after ramming into two policemen while trying to flee a roadside check.
Sentul OCPD Asst Comm S. Shamugamoorthy said the incident occurred at around 6.30pm on Thursday (Dec 12).
“We received a tip-off on a suspicious character driving a Mazda CX-5 near Kem Batu Kantonmen, Jalan Ipoh here and dispatched two police personnel to investigate.
“They approached the suspect and identified themselves as police, when the suspect lurched the vehicle in reverse to flee the scene.
“Our personnel shot at the vehicle tires to disable it, but the suspect sped off into a dead-end road.
“He then reversed out of the road at a high speed and rammed into the motorcycles of the two policemen, ” he said when contacted Friday (Dec 13).
ACP Shamugamoorthy added that the policemen managed to evade the car, which then careened into a parked car.
“They shouted the word 'police' at least five times at the suspect, but he refused to stop the vehicle and attempted to ram into them again.
“One of the personnel fired a single round into the vehicle and hit the suspect in the right arm, ” he said, adding that they managed to subdue and arrest the suspect.
ACP Shanmugamoorthy said investigations revealed the suspect, in his 30s, had 11 prior records and two wanted records.
“The car he was driving was reported stolen in Putra Heights.
“The suspect had also tested positive for drugs and is currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital, ” he said, adding that the case has been classified as attempted murder.
