KLANG: Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah reminded the people of Selangor to know history and understand the destruction caused by the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM).

In his address at the investiture ceremony in conjunction with his 74th birthday, Sultan Sharafuddin advised against hero worshiping CPM leaders as many in the armed forces had died defending the nation’s sovereignty and dignity during the communist insurgency.

“Many of this country’s citizens from the Malay, Chinese, Indian and other communities also died in attacks by the communist terrorists.

“People always lived in fear during that time.

“Many villages and police stations were also attacked and the people as well as police personnel were tortured and killed by CPM members, ’’ said Sultan Sharafuddin.

The Ruler added even if it is said that CPM had also battled colonisation, its ideology did not revolve around the formation of a Malaysia based on the concept of democratic constitutional monarchy.

Sultan Sharafuddin said the current generation must understand historical facts about the CPM’s ideological struggles, so that they will not be misled.

On another matter, Sultan Sharafuddin said mutual respect and understanding amongst the various races has enabled the people of Selangor to live in peace and harmony.

The Ruler added that he placed great importance on unity

among different races and religions in Selangor.

“We have to always take care of racial sensitivities and not interfere in the affairs of other races especially in matters regarding religion, ’’ he said.

Sultan Sharafuddin reminded the people about Malaysia’s dark history when racial riots rocked the nation.

He narrated how the lives of the nation’s citizens were tortuous and in disarray with the economy also adversely affected by the racial riots.

“So, make this incident a guideline for us to not repeat our past mistakes and fix relations amongst the races towards a better and harmonious one, ’’ said Sultan Sharafuddin.

The Ruler added people must take care of each other’s feelings and must not say hurtful things.

The Sultan conferred awards and titles to 91 people at the investiture ceremony held at Istana Alam Shah here.

Out of the 91 people, only 19 received titles and heading the list was Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari who received the Seri Paduka Mahkota Selangor award, which carries the title Datuk Seri.

Also at the ceremony were Teng-ku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin and the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah.
