SIBU: A 32-year-old man is in a critical condition at Sarikei Hospital with third-degree burns on his face after an alleged attempt to steal copper wire from an electric cable went wrong on Tuesday (Dec 10) night.

Sarikei OCPD Deputy Supt Awang Arfian Awang Bujang said on Wednesday (Dec 11) that police arrested the man after he sought treatment at the hospital.

He added that a 19-year-old accomplice of the injured man was already arrested, and said that he was unhurt in the incident.

DSP Awang Arfian said the case came to light at 9.30pm on Tuesday when a blackout was reported in Merudu, which is near the hospital.

"Technicians from the company went to the power substation at Jalan Merudu to check and they found several items that were damaged by an explosion, including copper plate and copper wiring," he said.

He added that police received a call from the hospital about a man who came in with severe burns to his face around the same time the technicians were lodging the police report.
