KOTA KINABALU: Dozens of China nationals who came to Sabah as tourists last month have been nabbed for their alleged involvement in online gambling in the first such bust in the state.
The 23 people, including four women, were nabbed from different condominium units in Jalan Bundusan, near here, starting from 6.15pm last Sunday.
Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Zaini Jass said in the first raid, six Chinese men were caught “busy at work”.
“We also seized 25 laptops, 55 handphones and five money transfer machines among others, ” he told a press conference here yesterday.
In the unit next door, police arrested another 10 men who were resting.
“Seven others, including the four women, were arrested next, ” Zaini said.
He added that the suspects
aged in their 20s and 30s were believed to have just started their operation several days ago after their arrival into the state as visitors last month.Only 17 of them have documents, he added.
“We are trying to establish how those without documents managed to come in, ” Zaini said.
He added that police are also hunting for more suspects and local coordinators for this syndicate.
Zaini said an initial investigation found that the suspects used Sabah as their base of operations for customers in China.
“This is the first such case busted in the state, ” he added.
