Search and rescue on after two fishermen fail to return from sea

ALOR SETAR: Two fishermen are feared missing at sea after they failed to return from a fishing trip.

Kuala Kedah maritime zone director Captain (Maritime) Mahmad Faizal Ahmad said a search-and-rescue (SAR) operation has been underway since Sunday (Dec 8) after both victims left the Kuala Sala jetty on Friday (Dec 6) in their boat at 6am.

“It has been four days since the victims left the jetty.

“The Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Langkawi was activated when the report was received Sunday (Dec 8), ” he said in a statement Monday (Dec 9).

He said an Amphibia Bombardier plane, boats from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Civil Defence Force, and marine police were despatched.

Also assisting in the operation were several fishermen from nearby areas.

He said the operation covered an area of 995 nautical miles from the last location of the victims’ boat.

He said the victims were identified as Ng Gua Xian, 44, and his brother Ng Gou Tong, 34.
