KOTA KINABALU: Police in Beluran district some 170km from here are checking on the identity of a corpse found under the Kg Bambangan bridge in Sungai Labuk on Sunday (Dec 1).
Beluran OCPD Supt Kasim Muda said they first received information on the corpse from people crossing the bridge at about 6pm.
“Our search and rescue teams were sent to investigate but they could not locate the body as it was already too dark and the river currents were too strong, ” he said in a statement on Monday (Dec 2).
He said search operations together with other agencies including the state Fire and Rescue Department had continued at 7am Monday.
“The corpse of a man with some body parts missing was retrieved at the Sungai Sapi area, not far from where it was first seen around 11am, ” Supt Kasim said.
He said the body has been sent for a post mortem at the Beluran Hospital.
Supt Kasim said investigators believe the man had been dead for over 72 hours.
“We will know the cause of death after a post-mortem is completed, ” he said, adding that anyone with a missing family member can come forward and assist in probe.
