KUCHING: The Special Cabinet Committee for the review of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 has agreed to set up a special council to monitor the implementation of its decisions, says a Sarawak assistant minister.

Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said the special council would be chaired by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, with the Chief Ministers of Sabah and Sarawak appointed as its members.

"To date, 21 issues have been submitted to the committee to be studied.

"As of July 23, seven issues have been agreed upon.

"These include the power to oversee the distribution of gas and electricity; the formation of a committee on the implementation of Federal projects in Sabah and Sarawak; devolution of power to the Sarawak and Sabah governments to legislate on labour conditions peculiar to the states under their respective Labour Ordinances; and the formation of a special committee to discuss health management issues," she said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 19).

The committee held its fifth and final meeting in Putrajaya on Monday (Nov 18), chaired by Dr Mahathir.

Sharifah Hasidah said other matters requiring further discussion included the review of special federal grants to Sabah and Sarawak, oil royalty and petroleum cash payment and state land handed over to the Federal Government.

"The issue of oil royalty and cash payment will be discussed separately by Dr Mahathir and the Chief Ministers of Sabah and Sarawak. The discussion is expected to be held next month," the assistant minister for law, state-federal relations and project monitoring said.

She also said business-to-business discussions would also continue between Petronas, Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) and the state government on petroleum and gas issues.

On the review of special federal grants, she said the Finance Ministry had agreed to discuss in detail the process, procedures and formula to be used.
