KUALA LUMPUR: An alert lorry driver apprehended a motorcycle thief while he was trying to remove the number plate of a motorcycle he was about to steal.
Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Noor Azmi Yusoff said the incident occurred around 1.45pm on Monday (Nov 18).
"The 39-year-old lorry driver noticed a man behaving suspiciously and removing a number plate from a motorcycle at the Ampang Hospital, when he confronted the suspect.
"The man, together with a group of onlookers, managed to detain the suspect following a scuffle," he said when contacted on Tuesday (Nov 19).
He said the suspect suffered minor injuries in the scuffle and was handed over to police when they arrived at the scene moments later.
"We seized a pair of pliers, an axe and several Allen keys believed to be used in motorcycle thefts.
"Further checks revealed the suspect had a prior record for possession and use of a psychotropic substance, and robbery cases," he said, adding that the thief has been remanded for further investigations.
He also thanked the public for being alert and acting swiftly in apprehending the thief.
