Penang garbage collector injured in hit-and-run

GEORGE TOWN: Yet another urban services worker doing his job early in the morning has been knocked down.

This time, the driver ran down a garbage collector who was working at 6.40am yesterday.

Three weeks ago, a city council worker lost his life in an early morning car crash.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Che Zaimani Che Awang said police tracked down the driver, who fled on foot after crashing into the garbage collector.

The driver was a Vietnamese woman and she has been warded in a private hospital with light injuries to her head and chest.

“The victim was loading rubbish into the garbage truck in Jalan Anson when he was hit, ” ACP Che Zaimani said in a statement.

The impact left Mukhtar Bahari, 66, with a severely injured left leg.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

This latest incident continues to rile Penangites.

In the accident of the city council worker last month, Chinese national Liu Shasha, 24, was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants and causing the death of the worker.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 44 (1) (b) of the Road Transport Act.

On Nov 7, a 16-year-old student and part-time pizza delivery boy was killed instantly after a bus rammed into him at the traffic light junction of Jalan Kelicap near Setia Triangle.

The 49-year-old suspect, Peter Paul Santanam, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs.

Several others were also injured in the accident.
