PONTIAN: It is a lie, said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad of allegations that he is campaigning for Barisan Nasional in the Tanjung Piai by-election.
The Pakatan Harapan chairman said he knows there were pictures of him wearing blue circulating around where it showed him campaigning for Barisan candidate Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng.
“That is a lie. Now, there are pamphlets circulating calling for support of Pakatan Harapan candidate Karmaine Sardini, but on the other side, there is buy Muslim first, which is intentionally trying to stoke Chinese anger.
“However, I do not think the Chinese will be gullible enough to be fooled by such tactics.
“They are wise and will not vote Barisan just because of such posters, ” he added.
Dr Mahathir, who is also Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman, said this in a press conference after having breakfast with some 200 people at Warung 800 in Pekan Nanas here yesterday.
Also present at the event were his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and other Bersatu leaders, including president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Youth and Sports Minister and party Armada youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal and Karmaine.
Dr Mahathir, however, admitted that there are unresolved issues within the Malay, Chinese and Indian communities in the country but the government is trying to find ways to resolve them.
He urged Malaysians to focus on what the country needs, adding that the government could not possibly fulfil every single person’s needs.
Dr Mahathir also noted there are still some villagers who still think he was with Barisan, which prompted his visit and campaigning in Tanjung Piai here.
“We need to tell the orang kampung that I am now with Pakatan Harapan and we are contesting this by-election.
“They should not be confused, ” he said, adding that allegations of unrest and fighting among Pakatan component parties were only to smear the government.
Earlier in his speech, Dr Mahathir said he was puzzled as to why Barisan was still using the “scale” symbol to contest since the coalition is left only a “shadow”.
“I wonder why the opposition is still using the ‘dacing’ (scale). MCA is half gone, MIC is hardly seen and Umno is only left a quarter of what it was, ” he said.
“They have no substance but just a shadow. Barisan is no more. It’s them cheating the people with the symbol, ” he added.
