LABUAN: The Labuan Sikh community marked the 550th birth anniversary of Sikhism founder, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, with a vegan lunch.

Hundreds of friends and relatives started arriving at the Gurdwara Sahib Labuan since Sunday for the celebration.

Gurdwara Sahib Labuan deputy chairman Balvir Singh said the sharing of food promotes a better understanding of each other.

“We are taking this opportunity to reach out to all Sikh communities here first before expanding our outreach to the multiracial community on the island, ” said Balvir.

The Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th birth anniversary celebration committee deputy chairman added: “There are three precepts in our faith: work hard, serve and pray. We must show these through our actions. Every Malaysian here is part of our family.”

He said the message Sikhs across the globe want to spread is unity and humanity.

Balvir said the commemoration included a charity programme where volunteers donated to the needy. — Bernama
