KUALA LUMPUR: Australia says 2020 will be a significant year for Malaysia as it will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) 2020 summit.
Its High Commissioner to Malaysia Andrew Goledzinowski (pic) said new goals and priorities for Apec would be set.
“Next year, they have to find new targets and priorities.
“It will be done under Malaysia’s leadership, and it will be an important year for Malaysia, ” he said.
Goledzinowski said Apec periodically decided on its long-term objectives and the last goals adopted in 1994 were called the Bogor Goals.
It was reported recently that Chile called off the Apec 2019 summit that was scheduled for Nov 16-17 in Santiago due to anti-government protests.
According to apec.org, leaders of the Apec member states announced and adopted “the long-term goal of free and open trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific” during the Apec summit in Indonesia in 1994.
The Bogor Goals inspired member economies to pursue action to reduce barriers to trade and investment. — Bernama
