MELAKA: Melaka is putting forward a plan for a play park and BMX cycling circuit at Krubong here.
State Communication, Multimedia, Youth Development and Sports Committee chairman Kerk Chee Yee (pic) said the new site would also provide a platform for "mat lajak" (modified bicycle racers) to practise their activities.
"Mat lajak groups exist in the state but not in a big quantity and could be controlled.
"We need to tackle the mat lajak issue by creating more awareness," he said after attending a cycling session organised by CIMB Foundation at Jalan Hang Tuah here on Sunday (Nov 10).
Kerk said the aim of unveiling the play park at a green lung area is also aimed at reducing obesity and social problems among young Melakans.
He said the state government is also finding ways to nip the presence of mat lajak in the state although it hasn't reached a serious level.
"Providing them a suitable site is one of the options," he said.
Kerk said close to 1,000 participants took part in the event on Sunday including top cyclists from other states.
He said the youngest cyclist was a six-year-old who was invited to the inaugural cycling event in Melaka.
"CIMB Foundation has organised similar events in other parts of the country and this is the first time it's being held here," he added.
