Man killed after car veers off highway

MIRI: A driver drowned when his four-wheel drive overshot the Pan-Borneo highway during heavy rain before plunging into a swamp about 10m away.

Chan Pek Lam, 65, was driving his vehicle along KM84 of the Miri-Bintulu section of the highway when it went out of control yesterday.

The 8am incident happened near Kg Iran, about 84km south of Miri.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said the victim was found dead inside his submerged vehicle.

Personnel from the Miri Fire and Rescue squad rushed to the site after receiving an alert from the public.

“When our team arrived at the spot, the driver had already drowned. Our personnel managed to extricate his body and handed it over to the police, ” Law said.

Initial investigations indicated there was no sign of any collision with any other vehicle.

There was torrential rain over Miri and other parts of northern Sarawak yesterday morning.
