GEORGE TOWN: An enactment to control and prohibit the spread of other religions to Muslims is being drafted by the state government, says Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman.

The Deputy Chief Minister I said the Penang Islamic Religious Council’s legal technical committee secretary had proposed the enactment during a meeting on Oct 14.

“In principle, the committee agreed with the proposal, and the state Syariah prosecution department will review the drafted enactment and make improvements.

“It will also refer to other states that have a similar enactment, ” he said in reply to a question by Nor Hafizah Othman (BN-Permatang Berangan) at the state legislative assembly yesterday.

On whether the state’s Islamic Affairs Department would act against those who tried to spread other religions to Muslims, Ahmad Zakiyuddin (PH-Pinang Tunggal) said enforcement was needed.

“The enforcement team will cooperate with the police to investigate and monitor any attempts to convert Muslims to other religions.“It is an offence under Section 5 of the state Syariah Offences Enactment 1996, for anyone to spread non-Islamic beliefs and religions to Muslims.
