SIBU: The Sibu marine police thwarted an attempt by two men to smuggle 100,000 litres of diesel worth almost RM1mil.

State Marine police chief, Asst Comm Shamsol Kassim said on Thursday (Nov 7) that the discovery of the item was made during a beat duty at about 11.25am on Nov 6.

"A team comprising an officer and three personnel members from Sibu Marine stopped a vessel on Igan River.

"Upon inspection, they found that the vessel was carrying 100,000 litres of diesel worth RM919,000," he said.

Shamsol said the two men in the vessel could not provide a reason for carrying such large amounts of diesel when questioned.

They were subsequently arrested for investigation under Section 20 of the Supply Control Act 1961.
