Jeck Seng has Barisan’s full support, says Ahmad Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional has closed ranks and accepted the decision to field Tanjung Piai MCA division chief Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng for the Tanjung Piai by-election, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Barisan chairman said some in Umno wanted a candidate from the party to contest but this had been resolved.

“Those previously disgruntled have moved on and are committed to ensuring Barisan’s win in the by-election, ” said Ahmad Zahid.

“They accepted the fact that the spirit of unity among Barisan component parties must be prioritised.

“With this spirit of togetherness, Barisan machinery from every component party is moving in one direction to give our full support to Wee, ” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

In Johor Baru, state Umno Youth chief Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said the youth wing welcomed the decision from Barisan’s leadership to renominate Wee.

He said the move put to rest claims that the Umno-PAS pact was inclusive to only one race.

“Wee’s nomination has silenced the critics, especially our opponents that have labelled Umno as greedy, racist and described the ‘Muafakat Nasional’ (National Unity) as being inclusive to one particular race, ” he said here yesterday.

Mohd Hairi said Johor Umno Youth would work hard to ensure victory.

“We believe the decision was made on consensus among the multiracial parties within Barisan and the wisdom of our leaders, ” he said.

He said winning was important as it would send a message to Putrajaya that the people were rejecting their administration.

Mohd Hairi said Umno Youth would use the by-election to highlight Pakatan Harapan’s unfulfilled manifesto.
