JOHOR BARU: All eyes will be in Pontian today with both Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan expected to reveal their candidates for the Tanjung Piai by-election.
Pakatan’s Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is expected to introduce its candidate at 2pm at the Hai Kee Hall located in Kampung Seri Bunian.
Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is scheduled to make the announcement.
Johor Pakatan election director Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said the list of candidates has already been given to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is Pakatan chairman.
“The names are inside Dr Mahathir’s file and we will wait for Muhyiddin to make the announcement.
“Whoever Bersatu chooses as their candidate, the person will receive the full support from Amanah, ” said Salahuddin, who is also Amanah deputy president.
Barisan will reveal its candidate at the Pontian Umno building at about 3.30pm.
Barisan chairman and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will make the announcement and later launch their election machinery.
Supporters have been told to come in blue attire in a show of force.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong will also be launching the party’s war room located along Jalan Besar in Pekan Nenas at noon.
According to political analyst Dr Mohd Akbal Abdullah, both sides must field a local in the by-election.
“The winnable candidate should be a local as the person understands the need and the pulse of the rakyat in Tanjung Piai.
“This by-election is different from the general election because it will see national issues influencing voters as they need a representative who can deliver for them, ” he said.
The Election Commission has fixed nomination on Saturday and polling on Nov 16.
The by-election was called following the death of its incumbent Datuk Dr Md Farid Md Rafik last Sept 21 due to heart complications.
