KUALA LUMPUR: Habeas corpus applications will be filed to seek the release of five men detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act over their alleged links to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Lawyer Ramkarpal Singh said the applications would be filed at the Kuala Lumpur Court today.

“We will hold a press conference outside the courthouse at about noon after filing the applications,” he said.

Habeas corpus is a writ requiring a person under arrest to be brought before a judge or into court, mainly to secure the person’s release unless lawful grounds are shown for their detention.

It is learnt the applications

would be made on behalf of Melaka DAP exco member and Gadek assemblyman G. Saminathan, Seremban Jaya DAP assemblyman P. Gunasekaran, S. Chandru, V. Suresh Kumar and S. Arivainthan.

The Bukit Aman Counter Terrorism Division (E8) arrested Gunasekaran and Saminathan on Oct 10.

E8 also detained five other suspects following raids in Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Kedah, Perak, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

Two days later, police arrested five more suspects following raids in Melaka, Penang and Selangor.
