A GROUP of female police officers in Tamil Nadu, India, carried the casket of a deceased woman inspector to the cemetery in a highly unusual funeral, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Women generally do not participate in the burial rites that are performed once the body of a dead person leaves the house.

The action of these female officers had drawn praise and admiration online.

K. Sridevi, 48, who was with an all-women police station in Chennai died of cervical cancer on Thursday.

She had joined the police force in 1991. Her fellow colleagues and the district police chief DCP G. Subbulakshmi paid their last respects at her home during the wake. When the deceased was being carried to the crematorium on a pall, a female officer took up one corner.

Soon, other female officers followed suit and carried their counterpart all the way to the crematorium.
