JOHOR BARU: The marine police seized 11,050 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth RM2mil during an operation at Pasir Gudang Highway on Saturday (Oct 19).
Marine Police Southern Region Two acting commander Supt Noor Azman Jamal said the operation was conducted at about 3am, based on the information gathered by the its Special Task Force from Bukit Aman.
“A team of police stopped a five-tonne lorry at Pasir Gudang Highway that was driven by a 40-year-old man and a sedan driven by a 38-year-old man.
“Inspections inside the lorry revealed 221 brown boxes covered in plastic that contained 11,050 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth more than RM2mil, ” he said at a press conference at Marine Police Training Facility here on Sunday (Oct 20).
He added that the 38-year-old suspect was believed to have acted as a tonto for the lorry driver.
“We are currently investigating the source of these contraband, ” he said, adding that the cigarettes were believed to be sold in the local market.
Supt Noor Azman said they were still waiting for a remand order for the two suspects, with the case having been handed over to Seri Alam District Police for investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
