SIBU: The police believe that the unidentified man who was found dead with 16 bricks tied to his neck and waist on Oct 14 was murdered.
Deputy state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Dev Kumar, when contacted on Saturday (Oct 19), said the police have reclassified the case as murder under section 302 of the Penal Code.
"We have interviewed witnesses who saw four men fighting with the victim. We believe the fight took place on board a fishing vessel that was berthed in Belawai on the night of Oct 9," he said.
He added that the witnesses saw the fight but did not see the suspects throwing the victim overboard.
"There are four suspects, all foreigners. They fled Sibu immediately after the incident," he said.
DCP Dev Kumar said the police have strong reason to believe that they may have returned to their home country.
"One woman, whom we believe knows the suspects and may shed some light on the incident, has been picked up for questioning," he said.
He said a post-mortem on the body would be conducted on Oct 22 and added that the police hope to determine the cause of death through the post-mortem
The body was originally found by a person who was fishing in the river near a private jetty in Jalan Lanang.
