IPOH: The man in Perak infected with the zika virus – Malaysia’s first and only case this year – died yesterday morning.
Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there was a possibility that the 30-year-old man in Manjung died after being infected by the virus.
“Most likely the virus was locally transmitted but in-depth investigations are being carried out, ” he said yesterday.
Dr Noor Hisham said this was the ninth recorded case in the country since 2016, which was when the last zika infection was reported.
On Wednesday, Dr Noor Hisham had said that the ministry’s disease control division was alerted by the Perak health department on Oct 12 regarding a single suspected zika case.
He had said that a test conducted by the Institute of Medical Research the next day found the result to be positive.
The patient was hospitalised on Sept 27 after showing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea.
On Sept 29, he was transferred to the intensive care unit of the Manjung hospital.
