MELAKA: Traditional oil lamps will light up the home of Melaka executive councillor G. Saminathan (pic) this coming Deepavali celebrations despite his detention by the authorities for alleged links with a terrorist group.

State deputy legislative assembly speaker Dr Wong Fort Pin said a simple Festival of Light gathering would be organised at Saminathan's house in Durian Tunggal in the presence of family members and relatives.

"He is still our comrade, and we are not going to abandon him when he needs us the most during this difficult period," he said when met at his service centre in Bemban here on Friday (Oct 18).

Wong said Melaka Housing, Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Tey Kok Kiew has been visiting Saminathan's family, as well as the families of two more detainees – chief executive officer of a state government agency and a local councillor – to give moral support to them.

All three men were detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 in a major police crackdown for allegedly attempting to revive a terror group – Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

"We hope the truth will prevail and for the authorities to complete their investigations as soon as possible," he said.

Wong said Chief Minister Adly Zahari had also been very supportive and compassionate to the affected families.

He said Melaka officials were awaiting the updates on the status of Saminathan, the state Consumerism, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman, who is also Gadek assemblyman.

"We are prepared for any eventuality, even a by-election, but I am confident it would not come to that," he said.

On talks that some Melaka officials were distancing themselves from Saminathan’s family, Wong said it was up to the individuals concerned but "we will be with him through thick and thin".
